With the appearance of the new generation of consoles, the question arises for many gamers as to which headset is the best choice. Especially when it comes to online gaming, a good headset is often decisive for winning or losing. That is why there are a number of gaming headsets that meet the special standards and requirements for gamers. However, the price range is very wide and it is not uncommon for a high price to be an indicator of a good product. Therefore, the question arises as to which specifications and which requirements gamers have to pay attention to so that they can decide on the right headset with which they want to play on the new Playstation 5.

The sound in the Playstation 5

The sound output in the latest Sony console is carried out by the Tempest 3D audio chip. This makes the sound output explicitly through headphones much more immersive, which creates a kind of virtual surround sound. This allows opponents to be located much more precisely if the respective game should support the 3D sound. Dolby Atmos is unfortunately not (yet) supported by the Playstation 5. Unfortunately, a virtual surround sound experience can only be achieved with headphones at the moment. According to the manufacturers, the 3D audio chip should be able to display up to 5,000 noise sources.

What properties should a gaming headset necessarily have?

Regardless of whether virtual surround sound, wireless or wired, as well as the processing and existing RGB lighting. Gamers have to pay attention to a few things when they decide to buy a gaming headset, this is as true for the PC as it is for the consoles.

The structure of the auricle and the sound

A mostly underestimated point when buying gaming headsets is the design of the auricle. Since the headset can be worn for several hours, a comfortable fit on the ear is more than important. For this reason, it is worth taking a closer look at the preferred model and, at best, trying it out. An open design can also enormously prevent excessive sweating and heat build-up on the ears.

In the case of open or so-called half-open variants, it is possible to look through the auricle when looking at the headset from the outside. The better ventilation of the ears works perfectly against heavy sweating and the development of heat. However, the sound is also influenced by this construction. Bass sounds less powerful and sounds generally arrive more neutral and spatial in the ear.

A closed construction, on the other hand, offers significantly better sound and powerful bass, but it can happen that the player sweats a lot after a short time, as a strong warmth develops under the auricles in a very short time. Here it is important to consider which factor is more important.

In terms of sound, many gaming headsets now offer virtual surround sound. This has the advantage that opponents and shots can be located better spatially, which is an enormous advantage, especially in online games. Thanks to its 3D audio chip, the Playstation 5 can also simulate virtual surround sound with headphones without any problems.

The microphone

Another important aspect when buying a gaming headset for the Playstation 5 is of course the microphone. Explicitly in online gaming, communication with other players is of enormous importance, which is made much more difficult by a microphone of poor quality. Therefore, when buying a headset, the focus should be on the quality of the microphone if the headset is used for online gaming.

The ten best headphones & headsets for the Playstation 5

Since there are some criteria that should be considered when buying a headset or headphones, the ten best models for the Playstation 5 are presented below. The order of placement is subjective. Every gamer has his own purchase criteria and specifications, which are personally important to him. Therefore, the order is primarily irrelevant here.

1st place: Sony Pulse 3D – the undefeated winner

Sony PULSE 3D wireless headset [PlayStation 5]
Sony PULSE 3D wireless headset [PlayStation 5]

  • The PULSE 3D wireless headset was specially developed to play back 3D audio, as is possible with the PlayStation5. Tempest 3D-AudioTech puts you on the PS5 in incredibly immersive soundscapes in which the sound seems to come from every direction
  • Enjoy stylish gaming fun with an elegant headset that perfectly complements the look of your PS5 console and has optimized ear pads and a headband for additional comfort
  • The two built-in microphones are optimally positioned for clear voice recordings and are equipped with noise-canceling technology so that you can be sure that your friends can hear you online.

Connection type: Wireless Battery
life: 12 hours
Weight: 295 g

With the Sony Pulse 3D, Sony is launching its own headset, which is perfectly designed for the Playstation 5’s 3D audio sound chip. Due to the strong sound, the player is catapulted directly into the game and carried away by an immersive sound experience. Since the 3D sound from the Tempest chip will initially only be available for selected headsets, Sony has launched the Pulse 3D, one of the few headphones that can play the 3D sound.

In terms of sound, Sony delivers good lows and a powerful bass, the mids deliver a clear sound and the highs make a good impression. Only the microphone has a somewhat muffled sound, which is still acceptable compared to many other gaming headsets.

The integrated battery ensures a playing time of up to 12 hours until the headset has to be recharged. The simple and timeless design can also be seamlessly and easily integrated into many gaming setups.

2nd place: ASTRO Gaming A50 Gen 4, wireless gaming headset – the luxury variant among gaming headsets

ASTRO Gaming A50, wireless gaming headset with charging station, Gen 4, Dolby Audio, Game / Voice Balance Control, 2.4 GHz wireless, 9m range for PS5, PS4, PC, Mac - black / silver

Weight: 676 g

The Astro brand has long stood for high-quality gaming headsets and so the latest A50 model is of course compatible with the Playstation 5. The built-in battery allows a service life of up to 15 hours and is conveniently recharged with the included charging station.

The well thought-out bracket and the structure of the auricles allow a particularly long wearing comfort. Here the player gets a balanced and clear sound. Powerful bass and clearly defined mids and highs ensure a perfect sound experience. The Playstation’s 3D audio function is unfortunately not supported, but the A50 has virtual surround sound as standard, which also delivers good results.

3rd place: Razer Kraken X – Gaming Headset – the price-performance winner

Razer Kraken X - Gaming Headset (ultra-light gaming headphones for PC, Mac, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch, headband padding, 7.1 surround sound) black

  • SOFT HEADBAND PADDING: Reduces pressure on the head and prevents overloading and a secure fit: So that the headset sits well on the head but is always comfortable to wear
  • ULTRA LIGHT AND ERGNOMIC THANKS TO 250 G WEIGHT: So light by design that you practically don’t even feel it when you wear it, and soft ear pads made of memory foam

Connection Type: Wired Battery
Life: N / A
Weight: 250g

Razer definitely offers the best price-performance ratio with its Kraken X gaming headset. The Kraken X also simulates surround sound and has crystal clear sound quality, despite the super low price. Compatibility with the Playstation 5 is possible without any problems, but 3D audio is not yet supported by the Tempest chip here either. The headset still has virtual surround sound, which is not perfect, but is completely sufficient for the beginning.

The general sound image convinces with a strong and powerful bass paired with very nicely balanced mids and highs. Smaller weaknesses in the sound can definitely get over in view of the low price.

Particularly noteworthy is the low weight, which significantly increases the wearing comfort. The ergonomic and adjustable switch band also ensures a secure hold even during longer gaming sessions. The quality of the microphone also leaves nothing to be desired. Compared to similar products in this price range, the Kraken X is at the forefront and by far.

4th place: HyperX HX-HSCA-RD Cloud Alpha – gaming headphones

HyperX HX-HSCA-RD Cloud Alpha - gaming headphones with in-line audio control
HyperX HX-HSCA-RD Cloud Alpha – gaming headphones with in-line audio control

  • HyperX Dual Chamber Drivers for clearer tones and less interference
  • Famous, award-winning HyperX convenience
  • Durable aluminum frame with adjustable bracket; Detachable noise-canceling microphone

Connection type: Wired Battery
life: n / a
Weight: 336 g

The HyperX HX-HSCA-RD is actually a gaming headset for the PC, but it can also be used with the Playstation 5 without any problems. Thanks to the 50mm Dual Chamber Drivers, the bass frequencies are clearly separated from the rest of the sound structures, which ensures a clear and good in-game sound. With the sound control attached to the cable, the microphone can be muted and the volume can be regulated.

The comfortable headband, which can be adapted to many head sizes, guarantees absolute wearing comfort. The closed ear cups are provided with practical memory foam, which, despite the closed design, also contributes to the high level of comfort. The headset belongs to the lower price segment, but HyperX has nevertheless presented a high-quality workmanship of the materials, which is impressive. The aluminum frame of the headset guarantees absolute longevity even during intensive gaming sessions on the console.

5th place: EPOS I SENNHEISER GSP 301 – rock-solid headset from the middle price segment

EPOS I SENNHEISER GSP 301 gaming headset (closed) with noise-canceling microphone, noise suppression and memory foam ear pads for PC, Mac, Xbox One X, PS4, Nintendo Switch and smartphone

Connection Type: Wired Battery
Life: n / a
Weight: 363 grams

The EPOS I GSP 301 from Sennheiser comes from the middle price segment, and impresses with its crystal-clear sound image and is extremely comfortable to wear. Thanks to the built-in memory foam, the closed construction of the ear cups prevents uncomfortable wearing even after hours of playing. The flexible microphone boom can simply be flipped up, which triggers the microphone to be muted.

The volume is regulated on the right auricle using a haptically appealing rotary knob. In this way, the volume can be adjusted quickly and purposefully even during hectic game sequences. The comfortable padding of the headband also maximizes the wearing comfort enormously.

The sound is quite acceptable, but many games have some weaknesses in terms of the sound. Correct location of the enemy or a rich surround sound is only possible to a limited extent. For many players this is already an exclusion criterion. In return, the GSP 301 has a very strong and good quality microphone, which makes communication with other players much easier.

6th place: Razer Blackshark V2 X – the best esports gaming headset

Razer BlackShark V2 X - Premium Esports Gaming Headset (Wired Headphones with 50mm Driver, Noise Reduction for PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One & Switch) Black

  • RAZER HYPERCLEAR CARDIOUS MICROPHONE: The flexible microphone of this lightweight esports headset picks up your voice even better and has noise cancellation. The housing of the microphone has been optimized even further
  • LATEST PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION: From the cheering audience to PC noises, thanks to the special closed ear cups, noises from the outside are filtered out and offer great sound insulation

Connection Type: Wired Battery
Life: N / A
Weight: 240 g

The Razer Blackshark V2 X comes from the lower price segment, but it convinces with some great functions at a comparable low price. The patented Razer Triforce drivers, for example, ensure a perfect sound image without annoying background noise or other background noises. The headset does not support the Playstation 5’s 3D audio function either, but the sound is very convincing. The balanced mids and highs as well as the powerful bass speak a clear language.

Particularly noteworthy is the crystal clear audio quality of the microphone, which is why this gaming headset is perfect for e-sports. Communication with the other players is possible without any problems. Here one would have wished for a solid virtual surround sound, which would have made it much easier to locate the opponents, but in this price range you have to make cuts. But the new Blackshark convinces with a high level of comfort of the ear cups and the headband, which is of course essential for long gaming sessions.

7th place: SteelSeries Arctis 7P

SteelSeries Arctis 7P Wireless - Lossless Wireless 2.4 GHz Gaming Headset - For PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 - White

Weight: 421 g

SteelSeries launches the award-winning Arctis 7P, a wireless headset for PlayStation 5 (plus compatibility with PC, Switch, Android, and more). SteelSeries designed this headset to support low-latency gaming, which means audio is less likely to be lost over the 2.4 GHz wireless connection and you can hear every little detail more reliably. The headset has microphone monitoring with a retractable noise-canceling microphone and built-in mute controls, plus options to share multiple devices or use a wired connection if you prefer. The headset also supports an impressive battery life of 24 hours.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7P works great with any game genre. Without going into too much detail, the Arctis 7P’s performance was strong across the board. Whether it was gunfire, upbeat anime dialogue, or rousing adventure scores, the Arctis 7P did a great job of balancing vocal work and music, with a rich, vibrant soundscape and a good balance between bass and treble.

The SteelSeries Arctis 7P has no notches or expandable temples, but instead relies on a rubber band for a perfect fit. You simply place the headset on your head and the band adapts to the shape of your skull. You can easily tighten or loosen the band. That’s it. In addition to being effortless, the process is incredibly convenient when sharing the headset with someone.

8th place: SteelSeries Arctis 9 – perfectly adapted for the Playstation

SteelSeries Arctis 9 - Dual wireless gaming headset - Lossless 2.4 GHz wireless + Bluetooth - Over 20 hours of battery life - For PC, Playstation 5 and PlayStation 4

Weight: 320 g

The SteelSeries Arctis 9 is available in a version for the Xbox and a Playstation. The Arctis 9 is the version for Sony’s console and it impresses with its very long battery life and optimal sound.

The integrated battery allows a playing time of up to 20 hours before it has to be recharged. Another positive aspect is that the headset also has Bluetooth, which means that it can also be connected to other mobile devices such as a smartphone.

The sound image and the quality of the microphone are very clear and well coordinated. With regard to the highs and mids, a few minor improvements could be made, but otherwise the user gets a solid sound image. The high-quality ski goggle strap on the headset also maximizes wearing comfort. Only the slightly too high price can be described as negative. There is often more equipment here for the same money. But whoever buys SteelSeries naturally also pays the brand.

9th place: Turtle Beach Recon 200 – wired and wireless gaming headset at the same time

Turtle Beach Recon 200 Amplified Gaming Headphones - PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC
Turtle Beach Recon 200 Amplified Gaming Headphones – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC

  • Rich amplifier sound – louder is better. Immerse yourself in your games thanks to the battery-powered amplifier
  • Flip-up microphone – The adjustable, highly sensitive boom microphone picks up your voice loud and clear and can be flipped up to mute
  • Metal reinforced headband – A metal reinforced headband makes the design even more robust

Connection type: Wired Battery
life: 12 hours
Weight: 499 g

If you prefer to use a wired gaming headset from Turtle Beach, the Recon 200 is the best choice. The advantage here is that users can save money here, as completely wireless devices are significantly more expensive.

In terms of sound, gamers get a solid bass, thanks to the integrated bass boost technology. The closed ear cups with the 40 mm speakers also ensure clearly defined and balanced heights. The memory foam attached to the ear cups also gives the user a comfortable fit, which does not deteriorate even after several hours of gaming.

The microphone can be muted immediately by simply flipping it up. The quality of the microphone is also very good considering the price range. However, you have to accept minor weaknesses in terms of quality, which should be clear in this price segment.

The Recon 200 is powered by an internal battery, which has to be recharged after 12 hours of play using the included USB Type-C cable.

In terms of processing, however, the Recon is impressive. The metal-reinforced headband ensures a high-quality look and a comfortable and robust fit during heated gaming sessions.

10th place: Pacrate gaming headset – best low-budget headset for the Playstation 5

Pacrate PC Gaming Headset for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, PC, Noise Reduction, Over-Ear, PS4 Headset with LED Lights, PS4 Gamer Headphones with Sensitive Microphone & Intense Bass for Laptop Mac

  • 【TRUE SURROUND SOUND EFFECT FOR EXPERIENCE GAMING EXPERIENCES】 The Pacrate gaming headset offers excellent 50 mm audio drivers in combination with advanced audio technologies. It delivers high quality simulated surround sound to make the gaming experience even more intense. The responsive audio drivers help you better see the direction the sound is coming from, such as fire, enemy footsteps, and scenario indicators.
  • 【Noise suppression and anti-static microphone for crystal clear communication】 The Pacrate Gaming Headsets has a sensitive, adjustable microphone with noise-canceling technology. It filters out most of the ambient noise around you and enables real-time conversations without delay. Antistatic technology in gaming headphones prevents static noise from occurring.

Connection Type: Wired Battery
Life: N / A
Weight: 350g

The bottom line is the Pacrate gaming headset. For an extremely affordable price, gamers can get a sophisticated low-budget gaming headset that is perfect for casual gamers and beginners in the world of gaming headsets.

The suppression of ambient noise and filtering of background noises is relatively solid. The simulated surround sound is also okay for this price range. It should of course be clear that it cannot keep up with the much more expensive competition.

The ergonomic fit and the padded headband are also quite well thought out. In terms of quality, however, there is still a clear need for improvement here, as the parts wear out relatively quickly. As an entry-level headset, however, you can still get over that.

The volume is controlled by a regulator, which is located on the cable. There are also small LED lights on the headphones, which is nice for a nice light effect and for some gaming setups. Otherwise, you don’t get a high-end product with the Pacrate gaming headset, but a rock-solid headset that has all the necessary functions. Anyone who can live with a few compromises in terms of quality will be satisfied.
